Guidelines for Joining the Bujinkan Dōjō

Firstly, only those who agree to the Bujinkan Dojo's regulations and are determined to adhere to them will be permitted to join. Those who believe they cannot follow the regulations will not be allowed to join.

故に、

Accordingly,

Only those who have carefully read and agree to these regulations of the Bujinkan Dōjō will be permitted to join.

Only those who are able to consistently maintain true, patient self-control as martial artists will be permitted to join.

A physician’s medical report may be required. In particular, persons who are mentally unhealthy, addicted to drugs, or mentally unstable will not be allowed to join. This requirement applies to cases where, for example, an individual may have an illness that may hinder martial arts training, and to abnormal mental and/or physical constitutions which the individual is not able to personally control.

Persons having a criminal record will not be admitted. Additionally, persons who conduct themselves badly, persons who commit crimes, and persons who cannot abide by Japanese law while in Japan will also not be permitted to join.

Anyone who does not follow the Bujinkan regulations and who, as a member of both the Bujinkan and of society, engages in shameful behaviour, will be expelled. For example, there were in the past many people who travelled to Japan and knocked at the gate of the Bujinkan but were drunken brawlers, mentally unstable, those who by their delinquent behaviour put their own thoughts first and did not think about the trouble they were causing for others, those who pursued evil desires and committed acts contrary to the traditionally righteous mindset of the Bujinkan Dōjō. All such people will be subject to expulsion.

With regard to any accidents incurred during training, either in the Dōjō or other locations – only persons who can avoid causing trouble for the Bujinkan will be allowed to join. This is an important matter. Accidents are inevitable in the pursuit of martial arts and persons who cannot resolve these matters themselves will absolutely not be admitted. To reiterate, the Bujinkan Dōjō will assume absolutely no responsibility for accidents arising during the course of training, no matter what the location.

Persons who have joined the Bujinkan must keep their annual membership up to date. This serves to maintain the honour of Bujinkan members and demonstrates the gathering of individuals with the spirit of martial artists who protect the great path of the Bujinkan Dōjō with friendship and harmony. It is a testament to the martial friendship characterized by martial virtue, honour, loyalty, filial piety, and compassion.

The tradition of the Bujinkan illustrates the universality of nature and human life - this tradition being that pursuit of martial arts which comprehends the natural mysteries that exist within them.

“Know that the essence of Taijutsu is the foundation of peace. If you study this, you can walk the path of the immoveable heart (fudōshin).”

Beginner
1st Dan - 5th Dan Heaven
6th Dan - 10th Dan Earth
11th Dan - 15th Dan Humanity

Ranks 11th Dan through 15th Dan of the “Man” level are in turn divided into 5 levels: Earth (, “Chi”), Water (, “Sui”), Fire (, “Ka”), Wind (, “Fū”) and Void (, “Kū”). These are the highest ranks in Bujinkan Dōjō Happō Biken. The 5th Dan examination is of a spiritual nature and is something which is administered by Sōke [or his duly appointed examiners]. A 15th Dan is considered a true Shihan.

The Bujinkan has now become worldwide in nature. Just as the Earth has time zones, taboos also exist in each country and race. Friends in the martial arts should hold each other in respect, working together as friends who do not violate the others’ taboos, putting the heart of the martial artist first, placing value on the pursuit of the martial arts and striving to become persons of virtue.

Those who cannot adhere to the above will be expelled.
